DIAMNIADIO, Senegal, November 1, 2026 — Senegal has opened a historic chapter in international sport by hosting the first Olympic sporting event ever held on African soil. The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games officially opened on October 31 with a colourful ceremony at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio.

The Games bring together approximately 2,700 young athletes from around the world. They are scheduled to continue until November 13, with competitions and activities taking place across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.

According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the programme includes 25 competition sports and 10 additional engagement sports, with 153 medal events. The event is designed to combine sporting competition with education, cultural exchange and opportunities for young people to connect internationally.

The opening ceremony highlighted Senegalese traditions and the cultural diversity of Africa. More than 1,100 performers took part in the celebrations, which included music, dance and performances reflecting the continent's heritage and contemporary creativity.

The Youth Olympic Games are intended for young athletes and place particular emphasis on participation, development and the Olympic values of respect, friendship and excellence. The Dakar edition also includes a Youth Refugee Olympic Team, reflecting the event's international and inclusive character.

Hosting the Games represents an important milestone for Senegal and African sport. Organisers and international sporting bodies have described the event as an opportunity to strengthen youth participation, develop sporting capacity and increase the continent's visibility in international competitions.

The Games also bring practical responsibilities. Maintaining venues, managing event costs and ensuring that facilities and training opportunities benefit local communities after the competition will be important measures of the event's longer-term impact.
